Trilby, a novel about art students in Paris by author and illustrator George du Maurier, was one of my richest sources for details and ambiance. This illustration contributed to the way I imagined the atmosphere for parties in Sonja’s new studio after her moving day and Jeanette’s in honor of William Winkham’s graduation from medical school. The latter is the party at which Edward’s reveals to Jeanette that he will be going to the South of France to treat his laudanum habit. I love that there are fencers in this picture; they, too, reinforced a theme.
